1. What is a Machardani? (मच्छरदानी क्या है?)
A machardani (मच्छरदानी) is a bed mosquito net — a fabric enclosure hung over a bed to protect the sleeper from mosquito bites. In India, machardani has been used for centuries, long before chemical repellents or electric devices existed.
The word "machardani" comes from Hindi — "machar" (मच्छर, mosquito) + "dani" (दानी, container/enclosure). It literally means "mosquito enclosure."
Machardani vs. modern alternatives
While electric mosquito killers, liquid vaporisers, and coils are widely available, machardani remains the preferred choice for:
- Government and defence use — The Indian Army, Police forces (BSF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, CISF), and Merchant Navy mandate bed mosquito nets as standard-issue equipment. Chemical alternatives are not permitted in many barracks and field deployments.
- Hospitals and medical facilities — Patients in dengue wards, malaria-endemic areas, and government hospitals require chemical-free mosquito protection. Machardani is the only safe option for patients on medication.
- Budget-conscious households — A good quality machardani lasts 3–5 years with proper care. The one-time cost is far lower than monthly spending on refills, coils, or electricity for vaporisers.
- Areas with unreliable electricity — In rural India, field camps, and remote postings, machardani works without any power supply.

The material is the single most important factor that determines a machardani's quality, durability, and price. Here's what to understand:
Cotton Tape Mesh (Soot ki Jaali)
This is the traditional and most durable machardani material. Thin cotton strips (tapes) are woven into a grid pattern that allows airflow while blocking mosquitoes. Cotton tape mesh machardani is preferred for defence and institutional use because:
- It is breathable and does not trap heat (critical in Indian summers)
- It is durable and can withstand regular washing
- Heavier variants (400gm+) are extremely sturdy and last 5+ years
- It meets BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) specifications for government procurement
Polycotton Mesh
A blend of polyester and cotton, polycotton mesh is lighter, slightly smoother in texture, and more affordable than pure cotton tape. Used primarily in white machardani for hospitals and hospitality. Good airflow but slightly less durable than pure cotton tape under heavy washing.
Polyester Net (Synthetic)
Thin, lightweight polyester netting used in budget retail machardani and the foldable frame type nets sold on Amazon/Flipkart. Not suitable for institutional or defence use. Tears easily, has a shorter lifespan, and does not meet BIS standards.
How to identify quality
- Check the weight. A heavier machardani (by GSM or total grams) generally indicates denser mesh and better quality. Compare: a 240gm economy net vs. a 625gm Platinum Star — the difference is immediately visible and tangible.
- Check the border. Premium machardani have in-built borders (the border fabric is woven into the net, not stitched on separately). Variants like Classic and Platinum Regular feature this.
- Check the stitching. Double-stitched seams and reinforced corners indicate a manufacturer-grade product, not assembled-from-parts.
- Check the cotton tape width and density. Wider tapes and tighter weave = stronger mesh. "Fine mesh" variants like Silky offer the densest weave.
4. Size Guide — Single Bed, Double Bed, and Custom
Standard machardani sizes in India:
Single Bed Machardani
| Category | Width | Length | Height | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 36" | 75"–78" | 50"–52" | Army field cots, hostel beds |
| Standard | 40" | 80" | 60" | Standard single beds, barracks |
| Premium | 40" | 80" | 62"–70" | Officer quarters, premium use |
Double Bed Machardani
| Category | Width | Length | Height | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 72"–80" | 75"–80" | 60" | Standard double beds |
| Premium | 80" | 80" | 62"–70" | Large beds, extra height |
Height matters. The height of a machardani determines how much sitting room you have inside. A 50" net barely clears a seated person; a 70" net (like the Platinum Star) gives full sitting clearance. For hospital use, taller nets are preferred so patients can sit up comfortably.
Custom sizes are available for institutional orders. If you need machardani for non-standard bed sizes (bunk beds, ship berths, railway berths, hospital beds), manufacturers can produce to your exact specifications. Minimum order quantities apply for custom sizes.

The Indian Army and paramilitary forces are the largest buyers of machardani in India. Defence procurement follows strict specifications:
BIS Standard: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) sets specifications for cotton tape mosquito nets used in defence. These cover mesh density, cotton tape width, weight per unit area, dimensional tolerances, colour fastness, and washing shrinkage limits.
Procurement channels
- GeM (Government e-Marketplace): Most Army and CAPF units now procure through GeM. Suppliers must be GeM-registered with valid GST, MSME/Udyam registration, and product quality certifications.
- CPPP (Central Public Procurement Portal): Larger tenders for bulk supply are published here.
- Direct unit orders: Individual Army units, police stations, and paramilitary camps sometimes procure directly from manufacturers or authorised dealers.
What defence buyers look for
- Khaki colour (non-negotiable)
- Cotton tape mesh (no polyester or synthetic)
- Weight compliance (specified per variant — typically 280gm to 625gm)
- Proper dimensions with tolerance (verified by inspection)
- Quality of stitching and border finish
- Manufacturer's credentials: GST registration, MSME certificate, past supply records
Tender documentation typically requires
- GST registration certificate
- MSME/Udyam registration
- BIS test report or self-certification
- Past supply/performance records
- EMD (Earnest Money Deposit)
- Samples for inspection
6. Machardani for Hospitals & Railways
Hospital machardani requirements
- Clean white colour (mandatory for most hospitals)
- Lightweight for easy handling by nursing staff
- Washable at high temperatures for hygiene
- Appropriate height for patients to sit up in bed
- Often ordered in bulk through government health department tenders or hospital administration
Indian Railways machardani
- Used in AC coaches and waiting rooms in some zones
- White or off-white colour
- Must fit railway berth dimensions (narrower than standard beds)
- Procured through IRCTC or zonal railway tenders
Merchant Navy machardani
- Used onboard ships in crew quarters
- White, durable, and resistant to humid/salty conditions
- Ship berth sizes require custom dimensions
- Ordered through ship chandlers or directly by shipping companies
7. Machardani for Wholesale & Retail (Civil Market)
Wholesale buying tips
- MOQ: Most manufacturers require a minimum order of 100 pieces for wholesale pricing. Mix colours are usually allowed within the same variant.
- Pricing: Wholesale pricing depends on variant weight, material quality, order quantity, and whether you need branded packaging or plain bulk.
- Packaging: Wholesale machardani are typically packed in individual polybags with brand labels, then bundled in cartons of 20–50 pieces.
- Sadar Bazaar (Delhi): India's largest wholesale market for machardani. Most manufacturers and distributors are based here. If you are visiting Delhi for machardani sourcing, Sadar Bazaar is the primary destination.
Retail considerations
- Coloured machardani (orange, pink, green, blue) sell better than plain white in retail
- Printed designs with borders command a premium and have better shelf appeal
- In-built border variants (like Classic and Excellent) are preferred by quality-conscious retailers
8. How to Choose the Right Machardani (Sahi Machardani Kaise Chunein?)
Step 1: Identify your buyer segment
- Army/Police/CAPF → Khaki cotton tape mesh (mandatory)
- Hospital/Railway → White (polycotton or cotton tape)
- Wholesale civil market → Coloured/printed (cotton tape mesh with glass cotton border)
- Merchant Navy → White cotton tape (durable, salt-resistant)
Step 2: Choose the weight class
- Economy (240–280gm): Budget tenders, high-volume orders where cost matters most
- Mid-range (300–410gm): Best balance of durability and cost — most popular segment
- Premium (410–640gm): Heavy-duty, longest lasting, in-built borders, for buyers who value quality
Step 3: Confirm the size
- Standard single or double bed → Use standard sizes
- Non-standard (bunks, berths, hospital beds) → Request custom sizing from manufacturer
Step 4: Check the supplier
- Is the supplier an actual manufacturer or a trader/reseller?
- Do they have GST, MSME, and relevant certifications?
- Can they provide samples before bulk order?
- What is their monthly production capacity? (Important for large tenders)
9. Pricing Factors — Why Machardani Prices Vary
Machardani prices can range widely at wholesale, depending on several factors:
- Material weight (most important): A 240gm economy net costs significantly less than a 625gm heavy-duty variant. Weight directly correlates with material used.
- Cotton quality: Higher-grade cotton costs more. Defence-specification cotton tape must meet certain quality parameters.
- Size: Double bed machardani use roughly 2× the material of single bed, so pricing scales accordingly.
- Border type: In-built borders (woven into the net) cost more to produce than stitched-on borders.
- Order quantity: Larger orders get better per-piece pricing due to production efficiencies.
